It’s Time to Change

I step into the future
Don't know what's in store
I'll be walking new pathways
Learning more
Meeting new faces,
Making new friends,
The time has come to move on,
It's time to change.
It's hard to leave the things you know and understand
And set out on a journey on unfamiliar land
It's hard to leave old friends behind and walk away,
But the time has come to move on, it's time to change.
But my friends are a part of me,
A part of my personality,
Always there to guide me
Wherever I happen to be
The past leaves its mark on me,
And makes me the person I am
And the good things go with me
When it's time to change.
The seasons turn, and the years move on,
Nothing ever stands still, changing day by day
Good wishes go with me
And speed me on towards the sun
The time has come to move on,.
It's time to change.
Change for the better?
Change for the worse?
Who can tell it better…
It's for me to make it work
The sun is up and shining
And there's a rainbow in the sky
I'm going to find my pot of gold,
It's time to change.
It's time to change, It's time to change,
The time has come to move on,
it's time to change.

My Comfort Zone

I used to have a comfort zone
where I knew I wouldn't fail.
The same four walls and busywork
were really more like jail.
I longed so much to do the things I'd never done before,
But stayed inside my comfort zone and paced the same old floor.
I said it didn't matter that I wasn't doing much.
I said I didn't care for things like commission checks and such.
I claimed to be so busy with the things inside the zone,
But deep inside I longed for something special of my own.
I couldn't let my life go by just watching others win.
I held my breath; I stepped outside and let the change begin.
I took a step and with new strength I'd never felt before,
I kissed my comfort zone goodbye and closed and locked the door.

Xtreme Run 2010

Last December 19, 2010, me and my husband ran our first 5K marathon. Actually this is more like a fun run since an actual marathon is pegged at 42K. Nevertheless it was a fun activity. This run (Xtreme Run 2010) was sponsored by the Pioneer Mighty bond in benefit of Bantay Bata 163.

We arrived in the venue at Tiendesitas around 5:15am. The run will start at around 5:40am. Since it started to rain, the run started at around 5:30am. The 3K runners were the first to run, these runners are parents with children. Next are the 5K runners (that's us)  then the 10K runners and lastly the 15K runners.
Since we did not have practice prior to the run, as expected I was having cramps in my legs during the race. Oh well, since this is just a trial run to see if I can finish a 5K race, because one of my new years resolution for year 2011 is to run at least 3 race next year.

I felt proud when I finished the race because we never gave up despite the leg cramps. Our time was 62minutes. I promised myself that we do better next time.

Baby Superman Cake by Kitchen Krafts

This post is long overdue.  This is my first installment on my ongoing series on Migi's first birthday bash!
Our cute little boy, Carlo Miguel, turned one last September 9. Like every other parent, we are amazed how quickly time flies – it seems hard to believe that it's already been a year since he came into this world. We celebrated this important milestone with a small party. The party was attended by many of our relatives and some friends.

One of the suppliers that I got for Migi's birthday is Kakekrafts. The cake they made is very cute and some of the guest said it looked like our son, Migi,  thus I think his cake deserve to be featured all by itself.
We have a theme for his party: Superman. I was searching the Internet for a supplier that would do a superman cake but most cake from other bakeshop will only put a toy figurine of an adult superman. I already have a vision of what the cake would look like. It must be a 3D baby wearing a  superman costume with his hands up in the sky. Below is the design I wanted.

Luckily, I found out about Kakekrafts. I just gave them what I wanted for my son's birthday cake and with 2 weeks lead time they transformed the design into an actual cake.

I also had my souvenir made by Kakekrafts. It is a cookie with baby justice league as decorations. Again I just gave them the design and they copied it without a hitch. Kakekrafts can really personalize cakes and cookies if you really want to surprise a loved one.

BDO pre-owned Auto Fair (September 10 to 26, 2010)

Last September 10, 2010, me and my husband went to the BDO car depot.  This is located at No. 63-65 Howmart St. Road Baesa Quezon City. We heard that they have this BDO pre-owned Auto Fair from September 10 to 26, 2010. Pre-owned means foreclosed vehicles by BDO bank. We were considering to buy a car because there is a possibility that we have to return back the car that we are using to my father in law.

Before going there, you might want to check out the list of vehicles for sale at this site.
http://www.bdo.com.ph/assetsforsale/properties_sale_cars.asp
We had a list at hand, and went there as early as we can last September 10.

There were so many pre-owned cars of different models, brand and year at the depot. You can choose from a wide selection of Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubushi, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Chervolet, Ford, BMW.  Though there were some expensive cars that we saw, like a Ford Expedition, BMW sedan, a couple of SUVs, most of them were mid level cars.

Our prospects includes the following
1. Toyota Avanza 1.5G A/T Gas,  Year 2007, 49T Mileage, Scarlet Fury color, P499,000
2. Hyundai i10L GLS A/T Gas,  Year 2009, 13T Mileage, Champagne Gold, P389,000
The process includes bidding at their office.
If you bid at the exact price indicated in the list and you're the first one to bid, most likely the car will be awarded to you. You can also bid lower than the indicated price but it will depend on how many interested parties there is. Cash payment will be more prioritized than loans.
The loan interest is peg at 25.65% for 24 months and 16.85% for 18 months but this rate is  for the promo only. (Normally, a 24 months loan is set at 27% interest)

Jalapeno Cantina Mexicana

For our 2nd year anniversary, we tried out the Jalapeno Cantina Mexicana. The place is made of  wood and the ambiance is very warm and inviting because of the yellow lighting. More importantly, though, it seemed like a relaxed, casual place designed for enjoyment of good food, drinks, and nice conversations.

This is the Jalapeno and Cheese Quesadila. We really like it because it has a nice kick to it. The spiciness is just right.

We also ordered Nacho with salsa dip and cheese dip. I think a group of friends would enjoy having these while having their beers. I really like the cheese dip, not too salty and the sour cream and jalapeno spice just gives it a bit of interesting taste.

We also tried the Grilled Chicken Mexicana. It comes with corn relish and mexican salsa. I love how the chicken was tender and tasted great even without putting sauce on it.

Damage to our pockets 510 pesos, this is exclusive of the drinks.
If your craving for Mexican food you might want  try it out,  it is located at  the FOODSTREET Ortigas Home Depot at Julia, Vargas Pasig.
Unfortunately, it’s only open from 6pm until about 2 am.

DIY Candles for Baptism

In preparation for my son's baptism, I decorated the candles to be use as a twist to an ordinary candle.

Here's how I did it.
Materials
Candles
Cartolina
Ribbons
Scissors/Cutter
Glue

Procedure
1.  Using your cartolina or specialty board, cut out star shape designs.

2. Make a slit at the center of the star using a cutter.

3. Insert the candle. In this case I layered the star (1 blue and 1 yellow).
4. Tie some ribbons at the bottom of the candle.

Yakimix @ Mall of Asia

Last week, me and my husband celebrated my 30th birthday at Yakimix in Mall of Asia.  I've heard that the place is always jam-packed with people so I called earlier for a reservation. Unfortunately they don't accept reservations anymore for that day. They only reserve half of the restaurant and the rest is “first come, first served”.

It was only 10:30am when we arrived at Yakimix. We were already 10th on list. People were already waiting outside the restaurant. Yakimix is an eat all you can Asian resto. Each table has an grilling plate for cooking raw foods.

Their choices of raw meat,  poultry, seafood, vegetables and other spices are all lined up on a buffet table.

But for those who doesn't like to cook or grilled their own food.  They also have a variety of cooked food like yang chow rice, sweet & sour pork, mushroom with broccolli flower,  beef strips with teriyaki sauce, seafood roll,  marinated and deep fried squid, and shrimp tempura.

They also have this maki section. I think it is the crowd's favorite because the tray is always empty. Yakimix also has an dessert section. They have blue berry cheesecake, chocolate cake, ice cream with different toppings, fruits and many others.

All in all our experience in Yakimix Mall of Asia was good. You should try it.

I love Indigo Baby’s Jar of Hope

Our son Migi has sensitive skin. Whenever insects bit him he would develop this large swollen rash. It would be very itchy because sometimes he scratches it until it becomes a wound. Recently, he was bitten by bed bugs. Every morning we would find 2 to 3 bites in his legs courtesy of the bed bugs. I wanted to put something to lessen the redness and itchiness. Through research I came across this all natural product called "Jar of Hope".

Jar of Hope First Aid Gel is made from blue chamomile essential oil, the most healing of all chamomiles due to its azulene content. Great for insect bites, motion sickness, puffy eyes, rashes, cuts, and wounds.
At first I tried it on my own mosquito bite. Usually the bite's redness would last a couple of days because I also have sensitive skin. When I used the gel, it pleased me to see the redness tame down much quicker. Now I used it for Migi's insect bites, little scratches, and wounds. So far, I have been very happy.
I really love this product. It is worth every cents. Thank you Indigo Baby.

To order their product you could visit their site at http://indigomanila.multiply.com
For those living or working near Ortigas area, It is also available at Spoiled Store (Address: Mezzanine floor, Goldland Milleniua Suites, Escriva Drive, Ortigas Center, Pasig)

My son’s first swimming experience

Last July 2, 2010, my baby had his first swimming experience. We went to our subdivision's clubhouse because we heard that it is newly renovated. Initially I wanted to go to "Club Manila East" which is just 15 minutes away from our house but thinking that my baby will only be able to swim at most 1 hour, we decided to go the clubhouse instead. Luckily, we had the pool all to ourselves because it was a weekday. We did not have work that day because it is Pasig Day. We had a fun filled family bonding day!

Leaving and Meaning

This is the speech that our Auntie Angeles made. I just want to share it with all of you because it is so inspiring. We are so proud of her.

————————————————————————————————

A commencement speech delivered by Dr. Angeles A. Kho before the administration,
faculty members, non-teaching personnel, retirees,
awardees, friends and guests at Siena College of Taytay on June 05, 2010.
 —————————————————————————————————

Until you reach this age / you would not have any idea / how it feels like / to graduate from something you are passionate about // If you are thinking of retiring any time soon / please do not rush / because / now / I do not really feel like leaving /
Look at me // Do I look like ready to leave and take a long vacation? // You see / I am still young— / very / very young / (Hmmm…Walang kokontra)/
But I would like to thank you / for asking me to give this graduation speech // Oh yes // You heard it right // Personally / I do not believe in retirement speeches // So my speech would be called / a commencement speech /
It is good to get a feeling / of being the best / in this graduating class // This is the closest I can be / in delivering a valedictory speech /
Are you excited to hear what I am going to say? // Because I am excited to hear / what I am going to say / too /
Sis. Inocencia Saavedra, O.P. / Mo. Aurora Villaverde, O.P. / Mo. Teresa Examen, O.P. / Sis. Mesalina Cloma, O.P. / Sis. Tarcila Rodis, O.P. / Sis. Benardita Dela Cruz, O.P. / Sis. Susana Bravante, O. P. / Sis. Lourdes Molina, O.P. / Sis. Agnes Cardeño, O.P. / my co – retirees / awardees tonight / lay administrators / faculty members / non-teaching personnel / guests / ladies and gentlemen / good evening /
Even though I can still stand here / for the next two hours / I decided to make this speech a very short one— / short means / five minutes… / and one hour /
Seriously / I just have three points to highlight— / just three / and I will go back to my seat /
Looking back to where I started here at Siena College Taytay / which is obviously a long time ago / 35 years to be precise /  it was not like this— / I can assure / you it was’nt /
It was a humble beginning / like many of us have— / a plain teacher / with a plain understanding of what this profession means // Teaching meant writing lesson plans / and depending heavily on books // Everything that was not in the book / appeared to be wrong // Everything was plain / and simple / and the motivation was never as deep / as it should have been /

When I became the Asst. Principal for Academics of the High School level / it was a higher post / that called / for a higher understanding / of what it feels like to be part / of a larger community / or should I say / family / I realized that I could not be the same plain teacher / in a more challenging post / I had to shape up / and be a better person /
Then / in 1999 / I became the First Lay Principal of the Basic Education Department /
It required me / to be a much better person / and I had to go to the gym / of personal development— / doing the things that I was not accustomed to / learning the curves of leadership / figuring out the puzzle of management and administration /
Those of you who dream of being a principal someday / should not only dream about it // When it comes your way / and you are not ready for it / I would bet my entire retirement package / (ay di ko pa pala alam kung magkano / di sinabi ni Sr. Vicky) / you are not going to make it /
You see / it takes one skill to dream / and another skill to make it happen / and another skill to survive / and another skill to succeed /
I would like to believe that I / together with my fellow retirees / just succeeded at that / without having to look at our service records /
So the first piece of wisdom is:  / If you want to get something / you must be a qualified person /
No one makes it alone / Or / should you persist on doing it by yourself / expect to fail any time soon /
Though my life is simply a product / of my decisions and indecisions / I think it is but necessary to admit / that it was a team effort— / from my family at home / to my community in school.
I must admit / that without this wonderful institution / wonderful people / and equally wonderful fellow workers / I would not make it to this day /
There are many things in life / that are meant to help us / become a grown up person // Sometimes / it is tempting to just stay / in our most comfortable zone / ignore the challenge / and go on with our lives surviving / rather than succeeding /
I chose to succeed / and given another lifetime, I will still choose to succeed /
But in the process of making the best / out of this life / and making this place a better place for every one / I must confess / that I have unintentionally hurt some feelings / and perhaps / offended some people I have worked with // I hope I can please everybody / and I hope it is possible to do just that /
But no / I think my apologies would not be enough / but I hope one day / you would understand // And if you are one of those people / my intention has more to do / with what we can leave behind / as a team /

I would like to take this opportunity / to thank my mentors/ and some people / who were instruments to what I have achieved today
A kind and trusted friend / the late Mrs. Beatriz Macabasag Doroja / for recommending me  to work as a high school Math teacher in 1971 / at Holy Trinity College, Palawan / now Holy Trinity University/
A loving friend for all seasons / my dear Sister Editha Abad, O.P. / for taking me on board the OP Siena Schools System / and / taking the risk to hire me as one of her teachers / without any teaching experience // How to discipline with a heart / I learned it from Sister Editha // She’s not only a mentor / but a dear friend / whose kindness and love she extended to my family /
The administrator who was full of wisdom / the late Mother Loreto Santiago, O.P. / for always believing in me /
The simple but with strong character / Mother Aurora Villaverde, O.P. / for showing a concrete example / of how to remain composed under stress / especially during a labor dispute /
The innovative and intelligent President of Siena College Taytay for 11 years / the late Sis. Estrella Tangan, O.P. / for pushing me hard / to believe in myself / and get out of my comfort zone / learn to accept risks as part of the success equation // Also / for making me as one of her partners / in bringing Siena College High School level / to it’s 1st level PAASCU accreditation / and / for making the grade school and high school levels / operate as one department / now known / as the Basic Education Department /
The very generous Sis. Lourdes Molina, O.P. / our first Basic Education Department Principal / who / unselfishly shared the opportunity / to further widen my cultural development / by paving the way for me / to travel / for the first time / to the different states of America / and / attending the convention of  the National Catholic Educational Association of the United States / in New Orleans /
The icon of simplicity, kindness and fairness / the ever supportive Mother Teresa Examen, O.P. / for the trust, confidence, friendship and opportunity / to become the 1st Lay Principal of Siena College Taytay / Basic Education Department / and / for empowering the BED team / to manage the different challenges /
The energetic Sis. Aurelia Navarro, O.P. / for supporting us / financially and spiritually / in our quest for professional development / and for being BED’s number one fan /
The Sister who is passionate for what is beautiful and clean / Sis. Mesalina Cloma, O.P. / for pushing the High School level / to answer the invitation of the PAASCU / to go into the process of level 3 accreditation / We made it / through your initiated actions / assertiveness / and decisiveness /

I would like to acknowledge / too / our very reliable / hardworking / risk takers / and truth seekers Basic Education Department team / composed of the Administrative staff /  the Faculty members / the Grade and / Year Level Leaders / Subject Area Team Leaders / Coordinators / and Assistant Principal for Student Affairs /
Indeed / I am blessed / to have a very supportive / dedicated / and committed team / because without you / there can never be a successful Basic Education Department /
Also / my dear family / for their unending support / care / and / unconditional love /
And to my ultimate mentor / our Almighty GOD / for giving me the gifts of wisdom / knowledge/ inner strength / and outpouring love // Without all these blessings / I know / I cannot achieve this success / especially / to be able to / effectively and efficiently manage / the challenging tasks of being the Principal of Siena College Taytay / Basic Education Department // To HIM / I give all the praises / honor / and glory /
So the second item is this: / No one / no one makes it alone /
Finally / I believe that we are left / with only two choices in this life // One / to live a life that serves as an example for others to follow /or / two / to live a life that serves as a warning for others to avoid /
Prior to standing here in front of you / I was trying to recall / some examples / and warnings / that my life can teach you /
I know it is a combination of pluses / and minuses // So / I would like you to judge whether what I have identified is a plus / or a minus.
What about my humble contribution / for making this school the first in Rizal / to be granted with PAASCU accreditation / and one of the 1st few schools in the Philippines / to attain the Level 3 accreditation status / of the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU)? /
Is it a plus or a minus?
What about my humble contribution / in making Siena—Taytay BED / recognized / as provider of quality of instruction / and very competitive faculty? /
Is it a plus or a minus?
What about Siena College Taytay being called by Sis. Aurelia Navarro, O. P. / as the “Flagship of OP Siena Schools? /
Is it a plus or a minus?
How about missing only one annual retreat from 1975 to 2010? /
Mr. Jojo Zapanta / is it a plus or a minus? /
How about my evading tactics / when asked to deliver a welcome / opening / or closing remarks? /
Mr. Carlo Arciwals and Ms. Concepcion Cruz / is it a plus or a minus?
What about playing hide and seek to avoid parents / or guardians who were galit na galit at makukulit? /
Mrs. Nancy Cabrera and Ms. Gilda Mengote / is it a plus or a minus?
What about having a workaholic Principal? /
BED Educational Council / is it a plus or a minus? / (Magsabi na kayo ng totoo / wala na akong say sa performance ratings ninyo) /
What about having known / as Principal for all Seasons? / (Mrs. Milette Santos, a Noranian / huwag ng kokontra)  / I may not be the elected governor of Rizal / (but I am contemplating to run next election) /  but look at Batangas / Vilma Santos got elected again /
There were hard choices and decisions that I made / and I am sure / we are all making every minute of our life // And I thank God for those difficult times / and confusing choices // They made me a person of worth / a person of strength / a person of dignity /
The thing is / I have dedicated myself to this profession // I would  like to believe / that I stayed here / so that  many others / would have a better life // Some people  call it sacrifice / I call it / love /
This profession is neither about my accomplishments / or my take home pay // If that is all about it / I could have spent this lifetime somewhere else // However / this profession / is about helping people / find their own meaning / through education /
If there is one thing that I am really proud of / it is the idea that I spent my lifetime / so that others may benefit from it— / no regret / only joy /
I found my meaning in what I did // So much so / that I found joy in this team // Now / I would like to challenge you to find yours /
It is not easy to find it / I am sure / especially in these trying times // But I would like to suggest / that you keep looking for meaning /
Will you fail? // Likely // Should you get up and find it again? // Absolutely /
That is the only best choice / we all have to take // Anything less than that / is a waste of God-given life / in almost all of its forms /
Life has a meaning // Look for it /
Before I finish this graduation speech / I am still asking myself / if this is it /
Is this the end? // What is still in there?  // Who else are in there? // What else can I do? // Do I start again? /
Honestly / I still don’t have an answer // But I do believe / that it will be yet / another wonderful journey for me /
Will I enjoy it? // Oh yes / as much as I did / while working here with you // Will I treasure it? / Oh yes / as much as I treasure / every memory I had here with you /
Will I keep it? // Oh yes / as long as I will keep you in my heart / in my mind / in my prayers /
I love you / And I will surely miss all of you /
Thank you so much / for the friendship/ and may GOD bless us  always /

Midyear review of my new year’s resolution

Often than not new year's resolution are doomed to failed.
During the New year I have made some New Year's Resolution. And since it is already June, I will check my current status…..

Lose weight and go back to my pre-pregnancy weight.
OK. I'm guilty… I did nothing to achieve this goal. hehehe.
Luckily I've already loose some weight without exerting any effort. I only need to loose the last 4kg before I am back in my pre-pregnancy weight. Yipee!! Need to exercise and to lessen my food intake. Haaayy… can I do this? But eating is my only vice… so many temptations…

Study Nihongo again
I've heard that anesthesia causes memory loss? If so, I think I loss my knowledge in nihongo?! because of the 2 operations I've had within the span of 6 months. One was when I had my ceasarean operation and the other was during my gallbladder operation. In fairness to me, I have taken the initiative to enroll in our company wide nihongo lessons which started last March 2010. By taking these classes, I am starting to review my nihongo again.

Practice my Driving
2 months before I got married I enrolled in a driving school. But ever since I got pregnant last year I've stop practicing because it's stressful for me to drive the Revo… hehehe excuses! Now my son is already 9 months old, and I've only practice twice around our subdivision. My husband says I need to practice more to gain confidence in driving outside the subdivision. Ok! I need to schedule this goal every weekened.

Hmm… overall I think that my new year's resolution is a failure! Need to exert more effort before the next New year comes again!

How about you guyz.. how's your new year's resolution?

Simple Ice Cream Cake

For Migi's 8th month birthday, his auntie Yanyan made him an chocolate ice cream cake. Well, it was delicious, 2 of my favorites, cake and ice cream combined. It's a shame Migi could not eat sweets.

For us who are still beginners we can also make a simple ice cream cake with no baking needed. Below is a simple ice cream cake recipe that uses a store bought mamon as base.

4 pcs store bought mamon (either from Goldilocks or Red Ribbon)
2 packs fresh strawberries
2 cups strawberry ice cream.
1 cup whipped cream

Procedure:
1. Slice the mamon in half.
2. Place the half in a 3 inch pan lined with acetate on the side and paper in the bottom.
3. Place slide strawberries on the sides of the cake
4. Cover with softened strawberry ice cream
5. Cover with another layer of Mamon, then FREEZE.
6. Next day, decorate with whipped cream and fresh strawberries, SERVE

Our new bookshelf

Ever since I saw this bookshelf at a popular home living magazine,  I wanted to have one. Unfortunately, I cannot find one in the all the malls I've gone to.

Finally, while browsing for a bar stool for our house, I chance upon this bookshelf at Mandaue Foams Ind, Inc. Since we already own a bookshelf, what we did was sell it at garage sale then my husband bought it as a mother's day gift for me! hehehe
Finally got my dream bookshelf.

Stir fry Beef with Broccolli

Yesterday I cooked dinner for my family. It's beef with broccoli. My husband said it's yummy. You can try it out yourselves. Here is the recipe.

Ingredients:
1/4 kilo sukiyaki cut lean beef
1 broccoli
2 carrots
garlic and onions

Marinade:
1 tablespoon rice wine
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon soy sauce
1 tablespoon water

Sauce:
2 tablespoons oyster sauce
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 tablespoon water

Thickener:
1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon water

Preparations
1. Add the marinade ingredients. Marinate the beef for 30 minutes.
2.  Add the 1/2 cup water, and cook the broccoli and carrots, covered, for 4 – 5 minutes, until it turns a bright green and is tender but still crisp. Remove from the pan and drain. Set aside.
3. Heat the pan and add some oil. When the oil is medium-hot, pan fry the beef. Remove the beef when it changes color and is nearly cooked. Set aside.
4. For the sauce, saute garlic and onion, add oyster sauce, soy sauce and water, bring to a simmer. Add the beef and the thickener.
5. For the presentation, round the cooked vegetable around the plate and put the beef at the center. Serve hot.
Bon-a-petit!

Baby Solid Food

It is really rewarding not to mention cheaper than store bought jars to make your baby fresh homemade food. Migi started his solids when he was 6 months old. We usually give him one variant for one week (example one week of mash potatoes or carrots). What I've noticed is that come weekeneds he has this expression in his face and if only he could talk I think he will say "What Mommee!!, Mash potatoes again!!!". It is also easier to plan and buy in bulk. His pediatrician recommended that if a baby will start solids, parents must give babies the same food for at least 4 days to easily see if he will developed any allergies. Migi already tried the following food: Mash Potatoes, Carrots, Porridge, Avocado, Mango, Banana, Melons.
Now that Migi will be turning 8 months tomorrow. I think its time to plan his menu like we do for the family. Of course, if I were to be given mash potatoes everyday for 1 week, I would definitely complain.

Menu for Migi this week.
1. Carrots with Apple Sauce
Peel, core the apple and cut into chunks.

Mystery Shoppers in Philippines

Get paid doing shopping? wow for me it's a dream come true!
Usually market research companies hires mystery shoppers to check how their client's business is performing in terms of quality of customer service.

As for me, I have tried one legitimate Mystery Shopping here in the Philippines.
The company is Frontline Focus International.
Here's a step by step guide on how I applied as a Mystery Shopper
1.  Go their Website and Register your Name, City, Country, Phone and Email
http://www.frontlinefocus.com/dialup/index.ASP
2. Wait for a coordinator or representative to contact you via email. They will give you a login access account to their website.
3. To be come a certified Mystery Shopper, you need to study certain guidelines or standards of a particular company.  Then you have to take an online exam. If you passed then you can act as a mystery shopper for that company.
4. Once your certified, you can choose assignments posted on their website or your coordinator will contact you via phone if there is a urgent assignment. Your will not be force to do all the assignments presented to you. It will be on your own discretion or schedule.

Here is my personal experience with Frontline Focus International.
My assignment was to evaluate a popular fast food company via dine-in service.  I need to observe the politeness of the staff, the cleanliness of the store as well as the time it took for them to serve my meal.
After the assignment I need to fill out a questionnaire form to evaluate the store. Also remember to order only the food indicated in the assignment or else you won't be reimbursed for your meal.
After you sent out the survey form to them, they will reimbursed your expenses as well as send you the payment fee as a Mystery Shopper via your bank account.

Also remember that legitimate mystery shopping doesn't require you to purchase a sign-up fee. Beware of these scammers.
Happy Shopping!

Ideas how to earn additional money

It's summer time!! It is time for those out of town trips to Boracay or Palawan. But where would you get those additional cash for your trip? As you know during summer our expenses also increase. Like in electricity bills: due to opening of airconditioner, water bills: due to those frequent showers you take to feel refresh. Here are some ideas you might want to try to get some additional income.

1. Garage Sale
Look for things in your closet or bodega that you are no longer using. In our case, since we need to buy a bar stool for our house, we decided to have a Garage Sale via our office. What we did was took a photo of all the things we don't need anymore and post it in a shared folder in our office. As of this writing we already had a sale of around 5K pesos. yehey!

2. Freelance
If you have a special skill that you can offer like doing Website etc. try to market it to prospective clients. You can do this during your free time. You don't need to shell out some money for this, all you need is some talent and proper training.

3. Crafts and Hobbies
You could also sell your creations or products of your hobbies like baked goods, beads bracelets, Scrapbooks etc. You should also find a way to make money from the things your are doing right now. If you are a stay at home mom, why don't you also baby sit some other kid or baby. These are great ways to earn money because you will really have a genuine interest in what you're doing.

4. Direct Selling
You can do this on your spare time. Just sign up with a direct selling company. Wait for your application to be approved then you can start selling. Some of these companies provide training to help your selling skills.

5. Invest, lend money and hope it will be repaid with interest.

Tongyang @ Megamall atrium

Our section had a party at Tongyang located at Megamall Level 4 atrium. It’s eat all you can!  Yehey! I was so excited because it’s my first eat all you can after removing my gall bladder.  Prior to my operation I was unable to eat meat and other fatty foods like bbq for a long time.

Tong Yang serves a wide variety of dishes. They have pork, beef, chicken, seafood, vegetables, sushi, desserts and beverages. It’s nice for large gathering because people can chat while cooking their food. Actually it’s my second time in Tong Yang. The first time was before they renovated their store. And I must say that the ambiance it created was very nice.

Saizen At Robinsons Galleria

Last Thursday, we finally got around to going to Saizen at Robinsons Galleria located at Level 3 East wing. It’s like we are in Japan again. When our company sents us in Kobe, Japan for business trips we usually visit the 100-yen stores to buy stuff to be used in dormitories like plates, kitchen utensils, frying fan etc. due to budget constraints.

Last April 2009, the real 100 yen shop opened its first branch at Robinsons Galleria. It covers 800 square meters of space with thousands of different kinds of  merchandise. This store is originally called Daiso in Japan, but somebody copied the concept and also took the name. Now the real Daiso franchise owners can’t even use their own name, hence the name Saizen.

Me and my husband spend more than 2 hours going around the store, and bought a lot of items for our house like utensils organizer, hangers, can openers and others. All items are worth 85 pesos. What’s nice, the store accepts credit card. We’ll definitely go back.

Common baby ailments and my remedies

1.  Diaper rash == Calmoseptine
Diaper rash is a very common condition that can cause a baby’s skin to become sore, red,  and tender. As for Migi he develops rashes whenever he poopoo unnoticed and the soiled diaper are left on for too long. We tried putting Vandol, which is an ointment we usually put on when we have burned skin. But Vandol is not effective for Migi. His pediatrician informed us to use  Calmoseptine. When we use this one, diaper rash disappeared immediately after one day. You can buy this at any drug store in sachet form and spread it thickly to the affected area every diaper changed. Make sure your baby’s bottom is already clean and dry.

2. Cradle cap == Cetaphil
Cradle cap among babies is also very common. If your baby’s scalp has flaky, dry skin that looks like dandruff, or even thick, oily, yellowish or brown scaling or crusting patches, it’s most likely cradle cap. Solution changed whatever shampoo your baby is using to Cetaphil Skin Cleanser. Yes you read it right, the cleanser which sensitive skin people used.

3. Congested nose or hardened booger == Sterimar Baby Nasal Spray
Sterimar is a gentle nasal spray based on sea water with its concentration of sodium chloride reduced to the level found in the human body.  Sometimes Migi wakes up at the middle of the night having a hard time breathing, or sometimes he has a large booger (kulangot) stuck in his nostrils. To prevent these from happening, spray on the Sterimar into the nostrils. Warning though, we are a three man team when we put Sterimar into Migi’s nose. One person holds the baby in a slanting position, one person who will hold the baby’s head still and one person will spray the Sterimar into the nose.

4. Diarrhea == Pedialyte
One thing that must never happen whenever your baby has diarrhea is to be dehydrated. Pile your baby up with water or if possible use Pedialyte. It is an oral electrolyte solution that is specifically designed to replace fluids and minerals (electrolytes) that are lost when a child has diarrhea.

5.  Mosquito Bite Prevention == Chicco No Zanza Gel Protection
From 0 months onwards, Chicco No Zanza Gel Protection is indeed very helpful.  It could  protect Migi in keeping those little vampires away, for hours. You could buy it at any SM Store (baby section). Warning though it’s smell is strong and price is expensive (almost 400 pesos).

6. Strong teeth and gums == Sans Fluo Toothgel cleanser
As of this writing, Migi already has 2 lower teeth. To clean his teeth we use Sans Fluo and a toothbrush. The toothpaste does not contain any fluoride and is specially formulated for infants and toddlers ages 0 months to 6 years old. One good thing about it, is its safe to swallow.

What changed after I become a Mom…

First and foremost, the saying is true, you will never truly appreciate your mom until you are one yourself. I love and appreciate my mom now more than ever. From the time we are still in our mothers womb until we became independent through their guidance is a great feat. Kudos to all the moms out there.

Second. You know the true meaning of early to bed, early to rise. At seven months, my son sleeps at 8:00pm and wakes up before the sun comes out, usually at 5:00am. And if we get really lucky he wakes up at 4:00am. hehe  Oh how I miss the days when I woke up and it is already noon. =)

Third. You forego buying the expensive shoes or cell phone you’ve been dying to have for something that your son will be needing like a crib or a stroller. During shopping his needs comes first.

Fourth. You’ll know why God made your breast. Even though I only breastfed for 2 months (due to low supply), breast milk contains important nutrients to help give your babies immunity to certain ailments. Breast milk is still best for babies!

Fifth. You’ll wonder why that toothless smile from your baby after you’ve arrived from the office removes all of your stress.

Sixth. You take care of yourself more because you know there’s a little person depending on you to take care of him until he grows up.

Oh how I love our son. And I hope he will forgive me if ever I make some boo-boos as a first time mom.

Pic-A-Boo Migi

Last April 3, 2010, Migi had a pictorial at “Pic-A-Boo” located at 5th floor Mega Atrium, SM Megamall. We finally got the prints of his pictures today (hmp! after 16 days!). The good thing about this store is that they provide costumes like superheroes, cartoon characters etc. The shots are unlimited but they don’t give  out the softcopy. You can choose up to 3 costumes for your baby per session. Regarding the prints, there are several packages to choose from. We  choose 6 metallic print (size 4R) which cost around 1,260 pesos. The costumes we choose were superman, ladybug and winnie the pooh.

At first, Migi was game but as the photoshoot progressed he became irritable. Maybe because it’s hot since he is wearing a costume and he is unfamiliar with the surroundings and the photographer. We tried to make him smile, even his yaya made silly faces to make Migi smile, but it’s useless. He began to cry when he was wearing the last costume (winnie the pooh). That is why we didn’t have a good shot to choose from among the winnie the pooh shots.

Regarding the service, I had to comment about 2 incidents that happened with regards to Pic-A-Boo. First was during the day of photoshoot, when we arrived in the store there was a photoshoot on-going. So they informed us that our schedule was 3:30pm and that they would text me if it is our turn. So we strolled around Megamall, come 3:30pm I was wondering why they haven’t texted me yet. I thought maybe it is not yet our turn. We went back to the shop at 4:00pm and the staff told be they forfetied our schedule since we did not arrived on time. They told me we should have come 10 minutes before our scheduled. This was their SOP. I told them how come no one informed me regarding this and I thought they are going to text me. We waited until the on-going photoshoot is finished, so that  they can accomodate us.

Second incident was regarding the claiming of the picture, they told me we can claim the pictures after 10 days and they would contact me if it is already printed. 10 days had gone by and there was no call or text. I called up their shop last monday and they told me the pictures are already there but 1 out of 6 pictures have a damage. They informed me they will re-print it. So I said OK, I will pick up the picture if all of them are already ready. Last Friday I called again to inquire if the pictures are ready. A Staff there said all the prints are already there. Today, I went to their shop and found out to my dismay that  the damaged picture is not yet re-printed. I told them I called last week and it is already fix. My problem was I didn’t get the name of the staff, who said the pictures are already OK.  I questioned them why this incident happened, maybe they don’t have any form of monitoring. They informed me that their printer broke down and as soon it is fixed they will reprint the picture.

Good thing, their output was quite impressive, I was so happy seeing Migi’s pictures that my irritation dissappeared.

I posted the best picture as voted by his lola and aunties (Sorry it’s  a scanned copy only)

Our new bar stool

We transferred to our new house in Greenwoods last August 2009, right before our son was born (September 9, 2009).  We had a kitchen counter top customized where you could eat or just hang around but the problem was, we have no bar stool. Today we went to Mandaue foams because I’ve heard they have a sale and found the perfect bar stool for us.
Check out our new bar stools.

The bar stool is only 1,200 pesos each and we got it for 20% discount. We also bought a customized bed foam for Migi’s crib and playpen. It is made of  Memory foam. Haven’t check the quality of output yet because it will be ready after 1 week.
Mandaue Foam Inc. is currently on sale until May 2, 2010. All items for20% discount. Their products includes furniture like sofas, dinning set, bed frames, ottomans, side tables, office desk, chairs, carpets, lighting and mattress foam.

There are 2 branches that I know, you might want to check it out.

BPA free bottles

Choose a bottle that is BPA free for your baby.
First what is BPA? It is short for Bisphenol-A, which is a chemical that is actually an artificial estrogen. It is used to create the plastic called polycarbonate. Research have shown that BPA are harmful to animals and people especially for babies. It appears to mimic the effects of estrogen, interfering with hormone levels and cell signaling systems. People exposed to high levels of BPA have a greater risk of developing uterine fibroids, breast cancer, decrease sperm counts and prostrate cancer.  If you want to avoid any bottles that contains it, look for the #7 recycling symbol or “PC” on the bottom. That’s usually a sign that the bottle contains BPA.

There are many bottles that are BPA free like Avent, Born Free etc. As for my baby, his bottle is Tommee Tippee although it’s expensive, its BPA free and its teat mimics mum’s breast so you can switch easily from breast to bottle and back again without the trauma.

Emergency Preparedness

Our company gave us a Grab and Go kit. It is composed of a flashlight and whistle, these are to be used during power failure, earthquake and other emergencies that might happen during office hours.

The flashlight is a common emergency essential. It is crucial to be able to see what you are doing and where you are going in an emergency. The company gave us a crank type flashlight. These type of flashlight has a lever that you can crank or pump for light. But what is the whistle for you might ask…

A Whistle is an important part of emergency preparedness planning, as you never know when you will be in a situation where you will need to whistle for help. In this day and age, many people do not think that a whistle is necessary because we have cellphones. However, if you are underneath an earthquake rubble or stranded in a flash flood trying to signal for a rescue team, or if your child is in trouble and does not have a cell phone, a personal emergency alarm, such as a whistle, can be of utmost importance.

Given the disasters happening around the world like storms and earthquakes, we must allot time to prepare for our own emergency kits in our homes so we will be ready in case of an emergency.

Gallstones (Multiple Choleliths)

Last year 2009, I would suddenly woke up with a severe pain in my stomach that would run throughout my lower back. I would also vomit whatever I’ve eaten that night. During November and December 2009 I would notice that I would have these episodes whenever I ate chicken joy at night. So we suspected it was the culprit. But during the last week of January these episodes became a nightly routine and that is when I decided to consult our company doctor. Dr. Morales ordered an ultrasound. And last February 1, 2010  I was diagnosed with multiple choleliths or gallstones, largest one is measuring 0.5cm.
According to Dr. Morales, gallstones usually remain asymptomatic initially meaning they don’t manifest but once the person experience intense pain in the upper abdominal region spreading towards the back, this is the time that treatment is needed. Often attacks occur after a particularly fatty meal and almost always happen at night.

I have two options, one is to change my diet and lifestyle, meaning low cholesterol, low fat diets (Goodbye pizza, goodbye burger, goodbye lechon!) to prevent these gallstones “attack” and the other is to have an operation removing my gallbladder. We opted for change in diet because I just recently undergone Cesarean operation. For 3 weeks, I only ate mostly salads with no dressing, fruits and steamed fish. I loosed approximately 2 kg in 3 weeks. I would have continued this complete change of diet had my pain didn’t re-occur. During the last week of February 2010, I would have these gallstones attack even if I ate vegetables and fruits. Worse I would experience these attacks even during office hours after every meal. The doctor said that my gallbladder is already inflamed so even if I drink only water it would trigger the attack. Also since my gallbladder is already inflamed, there is a chance that the gallstones will move to any of the ducts connecting to the gallbladder, liver or pancreas that would lead to serious complications and organ damage.
I also found out that my father-in-law had gallstones. One time he had a severe abdominal pain that would not subside, he was rushed to the hospital. There he was diagnosed with gallstones and had an emergency operation to removed the gallbladder. Since I don’t want my situation to turn into an emergency, I decided to have my gallbladder removed.

Last February 27, 2010, I had my gallbladder operation in UST Hospital. The operation was a success, and when they biopsy my gallbladder it contained green cholesterol stones. I took a leave of absence from office for about 3 weeks to recuperate. I experience loose bowel movement for about 1 week and would always feel full. My wound opened up a bit and became infected because I carried my son when he was sick with fever and measles. My surgeon just gave me antibiotics and advised me not to carry anything heavy….

Now after 1 month, I’m back to normal and I can now carry and take care of my son all I want.

Baby Signs

Migi is already 7 months old and we are teaching him some Baby signs. What are baby signs? It is a technique that will enable to communicate with your baby before your baby can talk.  Research says that infants develop the fine muscles in their hands before they develop those required for speech, so they will be equipped to communicated with their parents before they can speak.

We decide to teach Migi 3 signs for now. Milk, Diaper, and Sleep. This is because babies usually gets frustrated if their needs isn’t easily met. We will show the sign everytime we do the activity. Example when he is drinking milk, we will use the sign before or during the activity. Below are the figures for signing Milk, Diaper, and Sleep.

To sign “sleep”, lay your head on your hands.

To sign ” milk, open and close your fist as if you were milking a cow

To sign ” diaper”, open and close your first two fingers and your thumb at your waist.

Research says we must keep signing until the baby begins to sign back. Usually babies can takes weeks or months before making their first sign and you can teach babies to sign as early as 6 months.
Will keep you posted if Migi begins to sign back.  =)

Mommy’s Letter to Migi

Dear Migi,

Happy 7th month birthday! Time flies so fast, you’ve grown and changed in the past 7 months… your not a baby anymore you’re a little boy now.
You can already walk using the walker and its a first step towards your independence. You can already roll over so many times  just like an action star. You snore like your dadee when you sleep at night. Everyday I thank God that I am with you and can see all of your milestones.
I love you so much and my world is much a better place now since you are in it. Thank you for just being you and I will do my best as your mommy.

May 2010 Elections

The 2010 Election is only 32 days away.  Unfortunately, I cannot exercise my right to vote because my registration was deactivated. My officemate mentioned that she received a letter informing her registration is deactivated because she  failed to vote in the last two elections. Since, we  recently moved from Manila to Rizal province, I did not received such letter from COMELEC. I checked the Comelec website to investigate if my registration is active or deactivated because during the last 2 elections I was sent by our company to Japan for business trip and therefore was unable to vote.
This is the website. http://www.comelec.gov.ph/precinctfinder/precinctfinder.aspx

After filling up the form and hitting the "Find Now" button, below is the result. "Your registration record has been deactivated. A deactivated registration status means that you cannot exercise your right to vote this coming election. I called up the precinct where I previously registered and it is confirmed…. I cannot vote this coming 2010 May Elections.

The quest for finding a yaya for Migi

Migi is turning 7 mos this coming Friday, but he was already handled by 3 different yayas.
Flashback..

Yaya#1  – a.k.a. Ana  (Age: 19)
[Profile]: Single, high school graduate, already had 1 child, from Leyte
[Duration]: 2009-09-10 ~ 2009-11-21 (2.5 mos)
[Side story]: Ana was with us from the time Migi was born. Last November 21, 2009 she availed her day off. Did not come back after wards leaving all her things and clothes with us. From what we heard from her cousin (since her cousin is the yaya of our nephews) she eloped with a guy she eye-balled. First problem: she advanced her salary for 1 month because her father was sick and needed money for hospitalization. But since she ran off… O well goodbye money… Second problem she caused, was we needed a replacement ASAP because my maternity leave would be over after a week and I needed to go back to office.
[Lessons Learned]: Don’t give advancement of salary no matter what.

Yaya#2  – a.k.a.  Letty (Age: 50)
[Profile]: Widowed, mother of 6 children, youngest child is 12 years old, from Cubao
[Duration]: 2009-11-2o ~ 2009-12-24 (less than 1 month)
[Side story]: Letty was a mother figure to us. But since she was old, some of her methods of taking care of baby is also old. One example is I specifically told her not to let Migi nap/sleep on his stomach (Nakadapa na position) because there was a risks of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) when babies sleep that way. But my mom (which luckily lives next door) caught her numerous times. When I confronted her about it she said Migi sleeps longer in stomach position. Hmmm…  more time for her to rest?!? She also dislikes cleaning the 2nd floor of our house. Reason: she said she hears voices in our room, she claims there are ghost living in our house…. She asks for  a Christmas vacation and promised to come back on January 2, 2010. She never came back.
[Lessons Learned]: Not to get an old yaya because you can’t teach old dogs new tricks.

Yaya#3  – a.k.a.  Jean (Age: 19)
[Profile]: High school graduate,  single, from Zamboanga
[Duration]: 2010-01-05 ~ 2010-04-09 (3 months)
[Side story]:  After a week of working as a yaya and household help, she wants out. Reason she cannot do yaya and household work together because she said my son is too heavy. Ouch! that hurts! (my son was already 19lbs @4mos). Our solution was to get another person to do household work. After that she decided to stay. She recommended her cousin, Erica. But since our house is too small for 2 household help, and during weekends we are the one taking care of our son, there are lots of idle time for them. The weird thing is even if there are the two of them our house seems dirtier than ever. And since they are cousins, when something wrong happens (e.g. broken dishes, lost things) they would hid it among themselves and would not admit it even when confronted. Another thing was I got my telephone bill yesterday. Lo & behold my bill was expensive. Apparently Erica is using our landline phone to call her friend’s cellphone.  Haayyy naku!!!
Last week they ask permission to leave their job because they would be going back to their province.
[Lessons Learned]: Give a daily detailed schedule of tasks to household help so they would know what we are expecting. Set house rules at the beginning of employment.

Yaya#4: unknown…
and so the quest for finding a yaya for migi continues…..

BDO’s Junior Savers Club

When our son was born, our lives got busier. At the back of my mind, I was already thinking of opening a bank account for him just like what my mom did for me. Last March 19, 2010 I finally got around to doing it. I went to Banco De Oro to inquire about opening a bank account for my baby.
They recommended the Junior Savers Club.

Migi's First Passbook

Requirements includes
1. Birth certificate of the baby (zerox copy)
2. ID picture of the parent
3. Two valid ID of the parent
4. Initial deposit of 500 pesos
The bank account will be under the name of your child but in trusted to either one of the parents since the parents will be the signatory of the account.
(e.g.  Bank account Name:   "Kid's Name" by "Mom's Name")
We will put all Migi’s monetary gifts in this account. And when he grows up I want to get him interested in saving and learn about setting personal savings goals for the things that he really want.
